Paging Brit Bee,
via
Moviegoers who can't resist singing along to "Dancing Queen" are in luck.
Universal aims to pump up Labor Day weekend grosses for its hit movie musical "Mamma Mia!" by presenting "Mamma Mia! The Sing-Along Edition" in select theaters nationwide.
Powered by ABBA tunes, the musical starring Meryl Streep has grossed more than $320 million worldwide. Domestically, it has grossed nearly $117 million and is close to surpassing "Hairspray" (whose box-office take was nearly $119 million) to become one of the top-grossing musicals of all time, ranking below "Grease," "Chicago" and "The Sound of Music."
For the sing-along engagements, the movie's prints will include subtitled lyrics to all the songs so that audiences can sing along. "Sing-along" showings of movie musicals have become popular on the festival circuit, and last summer New Line also employed the strategy several weeks into its run of "Hairspray."

A 90 year old woman in the UK wrote this to her bank. The bank manager thought it sufficiently amusing have it published in the Times. Lets hope he also did the right thing by his customer.
Dear Sir,
I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with which I endeavoured to pay my plumber last month. By my calculations, three 'nanoseconds' must have elapsed between his presenting the cheque and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honour it. I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my Pension, an arrangement, which, I admit, has been in place for only thirty eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account £30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.
My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways. I noticed that whereas I personally attend to your telephone calls and letters, when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become.
From now on, I , like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person. My mortgage and loan payments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank by cheque, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate. Be aware that it is an offence under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope. Please find attached an Application Contact Status which I require your chosen employee to complete. I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative. Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Solicitor, and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities) must be accompanied by documented proof.
In due course, I will issue your employee with PIN number which he/she must quote in dealings with me. I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modelled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my account balance on your phone bank service. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Let me level the playing field even further.
When you call me, press buttons as follows:
1 - To make an appointment to see me.
2 - To query a missing payment.
3 - To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there.
4 - To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping.
5 - To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature.
6 - To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home.
7 - To leave a message on my computer (a password to access my computer is required. A password will be communicated to you at a later date to the Authorized Contact.)
8 - To return to the main menu and to listen to options 1 through to 8.
9 - To make a general complaint or inquiry, the contact will then be put on hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service.
While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the duration of the call. Regrettably, but again following your example, I must also levy an establishment fee to cover the setting up of this new arrangement.
May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly less prosperous, New Year.
Your Humble Client
(Remember: This was written by a 90 year old woman;
DOESN'T SHE MAKE YOU PROUD!)

hot fuss

the hotness that is brandon flowers.
wait, let me back up. sorry.
so princess bee is my partner in killers. actually, she's a member of their fan club, the victims. and through the victims, she secured tickets for us tonight to an exclusive little 'secret show' shindig in chelsea where the band would debut tunes from its forthcoming new album as part of a fan-only gig. [luckily they also mixed in their good old stuff.]
don't have to ask me twice. this would be my fifth killers gig. i know they're cheesy as all get-out and i don't care.
ever been in the audience when they close the show with their perfect anthem, 'all these things that i've done'?
then you know what i'm talking about.
so over to highline we went. we got there and encountered a long line. i told princess bee to wait while i figured out if we were in the right line. i wandered ahead along the block a bit toward the door, circling around an SUV that was in the drive.
and then out of the SUV in front of me appeared killers bassist mark, holding an instrument case. i was standing between him and the stage door. he smiled at me. i smiled back, and got out of his way. meanwhile, another little killer scampered by me quick as can be, so fast i couldn't see his face, but i knew his frame.
that would be brandon.
not a bad way to start the gig.
inside, princess and i worked our way up against the stage. we stood at the feet of guitarist dave, who has more frizz than i do.
and we enjoyed the most intimate, lovely little private killers gig. hello, brandon, 2 feet from us.
we both confessed to each other in the cab home afterwards that we were sure brandon looked directly at us in separate moments. and you know what, he probably did, given that he couldn't see much further beyond us in the crowd. either that or he was staring off into the darkness. shhhhhh.
yeah, i'm 30-something going on 13, and i don't care. the man is hot hot hot. shaved off his pornstache, cut his hair and had on a suit that made him look like a straight jonathan rhys myers.
muddy sound overall, but the boys saw it through. new tunes included 'neon tiger' and 'spaceman'...not bad.
listen, you may not like the killers. call them cheesy duran duran castoffs. call them record company creations.
they entertain. they're showmen. and tonight, they made princess bee and i quite happy.
now, back to our regularly scheduled adulthood.
I know that I can make it
As long as somebody takes me home,
every now and then...

son. of. rambow.
british indie film. bittersweet comedy. set in the 80s. hmm. is this a trick question?
of course i saw it!!!
son of rambow at first seems like a twee childhood film, but them it gets seriously, downright, gut-bustingly funny. the two kid stars are both amateur newbies, from what i understand and they just kill in their roles.
if i were a tween i would have left the movie with a serious crush on the bully kid. does he have an older brother [or, more realistically, a dad my age? ugh.]
there's a scene with sixth-form [older] kids sniffing erasers and dancing to depeche mode that's just worth the price of admission alone.
in the city, it's at the angelika if you want to catch it. great stuff.

young @ heart
as i have no doubt odd bee will. girl, i'll be rockin' right alongside you. we may be the oldest old coots at bowery ballroom one day but we'll still be at the front, seeing bands we love, doing what we do best. with earplugs in. and canes. 'what'd he say?' 'i dunno but he's a hottie -- look at that ink!' 'what year were they born?' 'what'd you say?'
'young @ heart'. here's a clip of the chorus doing 'i wanna be sedated' -- kind of a goofy one and the movie, which was a docu, was much better than this silly video, but you can see the fun they're having.

A few weeks ago we were eating supper at a Japanese restaurant near our house and overheard the cutest conversation between a little girl and her mom.Mother to little girl-
Q:"Which would you choose...noodles or hamburgers?"
A: "...noodles"
Q: "How about noodles or pizza?"
A: "...still noodles"Q: "What about ice cream?"
A: "Still noodles!"
